Shadow Puppets

Before television, Thai people in the South were entertained with satirical shows using shadow puppets. Human and animal shapes intricately carved from cow leather are deftly manipulated by story-tellers behind a backlit screen. With simple hand-tools, this ancient SE Asian leather craft, nangtalung, survives not only in this puppetry but also to create beautiful pictures depicting southern culture, religion and lifestyle.
