(Government holiday)
Two well-known and long-established Bangkok-based cultural organisations, The Siam Society and ThaiCraft, are joining hands for the first time by initiating a fun activity day to support the craft traditions of village artisans from all corners of the country. To be called “Timeless Siamese Heritage”, this event, appropriately being held on Thailand’s Constitution Day (10th December), reflects how an historically long tradition in village arts and crafts within the diverse cultures of Siam, are adapted and brought together to provide exciting products for contemporary life in Thailand.
Set in the beautiful and peaceful Siam Society garden in Soi Asoke, very near to both skytrain (BTS) and underground (MRT) stations, this will be a day of traditional Thai crafts, music and fun with a craft fair showcasing timeless Siamese treasures.
Baskets from Nan, Chainat and Narathiwat, Silver jewellery from minority ethnic groups: Karen and Mien from the North and Suay from Surin in Isan (NE), silks from Buriram, Roi-et and Khon Kaen, as well as shadow puppets from the South, are just a few of the many crafts coming straight to Bangkok from the villages of Thailand.
Visitors can relax in a friendly, cultural setting and enjoy Fair Trade coffee, organic tea and traditional snacks, listen to performances of gentle Thai music and watch the many demonstrations of craft production. They can also talk with the craftspeople (through translators if needed) about their work and their life, while the ancient Kamthieng teakwood house provides an appropriate backdrop and reminder of rural Thailand. For children, there will be craft activities and shows to kindle interest in Thai culture and an artist will show them how to turn waste materials into art.
For more than a century, The Siam Society, has encouraged the study and enjoyment of the art, science, culture and natural history of Thailand and its neighbours, making this knowledge and experiences more widely available to local and international communities. Through its fine facilities, publications and cultural activities (such as its renowned Library, study tours, exhibitions, lectures and seminars), this non-profit membership organisation has maintained a dignified yet vibrant blend of Thai and foreign interest and knowledge accessible to anyone with a fascination for this part of the world.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary, ThaiCraft has worked alongside village craft groups of all ethnic and religious backgrounds providing them with access to sustainable outlets, locally and overseas, for their products sold according to the standards of Fair Trade, that aims for living wages, good working conditions, transparent ethical business practices and care for the environment.
Well known for its monthly “ThaiCraft Fairs” currently held at the Ambassador Hotel, ThaiCraft is the independent successor to the Hilltribe Sales, started by the International Church of Bangkok exactly 35 years ago. Trading is carried out by the ThaiCraft Fair Trade Company Limited, while The ThaiCraft Association brings together producers, supporters and volunteers in craft and business development and the promotion of Fair Trade practices. ThaiCraft also organises tours to craft villages.
